• Mpitsang ready to tackle transformation

New national convenor of selector for Cricket South Africa, Victor Mpitsang, is eager to help build a constructive system to ensure all races receive equal cricketing opportunities.

The Former Proteas bowler, who replaced Linda Zondi in the role on Wednesday, was part of the group of 30 former black players and coaches that publicly raised their support for the Black Lives Matter movement a couple of months ago.

Mpitsang will now be trusted with the important role of incorporating various aspects when Proteas teams are selected in the future, but the 40-year-old said in a Sport24 report that it is all about providing equal chances to every player, despite the colour of the skin.

‘When most of the ex-players came out and spoke about Black Lives Matter initiatives, my thoughts were about the quality of opportunity that one gets. We need to make sure we put measures in place, first of all in our system, to make sure that guys get fair opportunities.

‘We just need fairness. As a cricket, whatever colour you are, if you get a fair deal and people are honest with you, you’ll say I had a fair deal and fair opportunity, it was just the same as any other player in the team, I just didn’t crack it.

‘We need to give equal opportunities for players to perform and to represent South Africa. Hence, I’m saying, it’s going to be so important for us that from a franchise system side, when a player gets into the national team, he’s ready to go,’ explained Mpitsang.

Mpitsang was previously involved with the SA U/19 team in a similar role, as well as bowling assistant, but he will now take up an enormous responsibility, which will add to CSA’s newly-announced transformation plans for the upcoming season.
