New Zealand are in command after the third day of the first Test against England, leading the hosts by 60 runs on Saturday.

New Zealand scored an imposing 523 in their first innings and England are 74-2 going into the final two days of the first Test.

Kane Williamson reached his 10th Test hundred as New Zealand went into lunch at 407-4, having lost two wickets for 104 in the session. Rain started falling and delayed the afternoon session.

Williamson put on 189 for the third wicket with Ross Taylor, who was brilliantly caught behind off the glove for 62.

Brendon McCullum batted with his trademark intent before becoming Mark Wood’s first Test wicket with the score on 403, having fired in a quick 42 off 38 balls, with six fours and a six before rain came down and lunch was taken. Williamson, who survived a very confident appeal for leg-before off Stuart Broad, was on 112.

New Zealand were also greatly assisted by the extras column, which was rolling along at 58 at lunch, with  33 leg-byes and 18 byes.

BJ Watling hit an unbeaten 61 to take New Zealand past the 500-mark before England wrapped up the tail with Stuart Broad, Mark Wood and Moeen Ali each taking three wickets.

England started their second innings poorly yet again, struggling on 25-2 after Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance found themselves back in the shed way too early.

Alastair Cook and Ian Bell took control after that and guided England to 74-2 to bring a tough day to an end.
