• Moreeng, Mahatlane’s jobs on the line

Cricket South Africa interim director of cricket Graeme Smith has confirmed the positions currently held by independent selector Linda Zondi, Proteas Women’s head coach Hilton Moreeng and South Africa U19 coach Lawrence Mahatlane will soon be advertised.

Zondi and Mahatlane will reportedly reapply for the jobs. The posts held by Proteas Women’s assistant coach Salieg Nackerdien and chief medical officer Shuaib Manjra will also be advertised.

‘It was always going to be the case that positions would be advertised in April when contracts came to an end. We’re busy drawing up the U19 and Women’s management and coach positions. It’s not stopping any of the people currently in those positions from putting their names into the hat, but those positions will all be advertised,’ said Smith.

CSA, too, will appoint a new South Africa A head coach. The role had recently been performed in interim capacities by former Proteas assistant coach Malibongwe Maketa and Cape Cobras head coach Ashwell Prince.

Smith, meanwhile, will likely be appointed in a full-time capacity this month. He had agreed to the interim post late last year, prior to commentary commitments in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League.

The start of this year’s IPL has been delayed from 29 March to 15 April and might be further delayed amid preventative measures against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

‘We are in final negotiations and hope to make an announcement next week,’ added CSA acting chief executive officer Jacques Faul about Smith.
