• Rassie to captain Proteas, Brevis back

Proteas coach Shukri Conrad has named a 14-man squad for the T20I Tri-Series against hosts Zimbabwe and New Zealand in Harare from 14 to 26 July.

Rassie van der Dussen will captain the side, which features four maiden T20I call-ups: Corbin Bosch and Lhuan-dré Pretorius from the Northerns Titans, North West Dragons batsman Rubin Hermann and EP Warriors spinner Senuran Muthusamy.

Pretorius and Hermann were standout performers in the 2025 SA20 for the Paarl Royals. Pretorius finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 397 at a strike rate above 166, including a blazing 97 off 51 balls against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Hermann, batting at No 3, amassed 333 runs at a strike rate of 128.08 and an impressive average of 41.43.

Bosch, already capped in ODIs and Tests, was instrumental in MI Cape Town’s maiden SA20 title-winning campaign last season, taking 11 wickets in eight matches.

Muthusamy is one of three frontline spinners in the squad, alongside George Linde and Nqaba Peter.

Dewald Brevis returns to the T20I setup after last featuring in two matches against Australia in 2023.

The bowling attack is strengthened by the return of fast bowlers Nandre Burger and Gerald Coetzee. Burger rejoins the national setup for the first time since October following recovery from a lumbar stress fracture, while Coetzee is back after a groin injury and last played for the Proteas in November.

This Tri-Series is Conrad’s first T20I assignment as all-format head coach.

The squad will assemble for a two-day camp at the Centre of Excellence in Pretoria from 9 to 10 July under SA A head coach Wandile Gwavu, before departing for Harare on 11 July.

South Africa will open the Tri-Series against Zimbabwe on 14 July at Harare Sports Club.

“This Tri-Series marks the start of our preparation for next year’s T20 World Cup,” said Conrad. “With several senior players rested for workload management, it creates space for others to step up and push for World Cup selection.

“Lhuan-dré and Rubin have been rewarded for their outstanding domestic form in the SA20, and we’re excited to see how they adapt to international cricket. We know what Corbin brings at this level and are keen to see how his Test and ODI skills translate to T20Is.

“Having three quality spinners gives us great variety, especially in conditions like Harare. Senuran’s domestic performances and batting ability add balance to the squad.

“Rassie has led before and brings experience, while providing valuable support to younger players on this tour.”

Proteas T20 squad: Rassie van der Dussen (c, Lions), Corbin Bosch (Titans), Dewald Brevis (Titans), Nandre Burger (WP), Gerald Coetzee (Titans), Reeza Hendricks (Lions), Rubin Hermann (Dragons), George Linde (WP), Kwena Maphaka (Lions), Senuran Muthusamy (Warriors), Lungi Ngidi (Titans), Nqaba Peter (Lions), Lhuan-dré Pretorius (Titans), Andile Simelane (Dolphins).
