• Proteas Women ready for India challenge

All-rounder Nadine de Klerk says the Proteas Women are fully prepared for their ODI Women’s World Cup clash against hosts India in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.

Following a disappointing opening defeat to England, the Proteas bounced back with a clinical six-wicket win over New Zealand in their second match, led by strong performances from Nonkululeko Mlaba, Tazmin Brits and Suné Luus.

Speaking ahead of the India fixture, De Klerk said the squad showed resilience after their first loss and regained belief with the win over the White Ferns.

“We just had a horrible day, but we know that happens in cricket sometimes,” she said. “We moved on quickly, had some good discussions about game plans, and came back really well in the second game.

“To have Tazmin and Suné stand up after we lost an early wicket was incredible – it brought good vibes and a lot of positivity into the group.”

India present a tougher test for South Africa. The Proteas Women have won 12 of 33 ODIs between the sides, with India claiming 20 victories and one no result.

De Klerk said South Africa are expecting a spin-heavy challenge.

“India have a quality bowling attack. Their two new-ball bowlers have been very successful, even in conditions that suit spin, and they’ve put teams under pressure early. We’re well prepared, but we know spin will be key – whoever plays it best will come out on top.”

With the hosts set to play their first match of the tournament in front of a passionate home crowd, De Klerk said the Proteas are embracing the atmosphere.

“It’s always a challenge, but it’s also nice. The crowds here are big, and it’s great to see that support for women’s cricket. It’s a massive clash and we’re excited for it.”

The match will be played at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium from 11:30 (SA time).
