• Proteas sweat over Rassie’s fitness

Proteas batsman Rassie van der Dussen is in doubt for Monday’s World Cup fixture against the West Indies at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.

Van der Dussen strained a groin muscle during Wednesday’s defeat to India at the same opposition.

The severity of the injury will be gauged during Saturday and Sunday’s training sessions.

The right-handed Van der Dussen struck 50, 41 and 22 against England, Bangladesh and India earlier in the tournament. The Proteas lost all three matches.

If unfit, he will likely be replaced by fellow batsman Aiden Markram, who was dropped for the match against the Indians.

The Proteas are also waiting on the fitness of fast bowler Lungi Ngidi. He sustained a hamstring injury against Bangladesh – and was not chosen for the encounter with India. His recovery, too, will be monitored through the weekend.

Captain Faf du Plessis has been declared fit to play. He was struck on the hand by a short delivery during the defeat to India.

South Africa and the West Indies have  contested 61 ODIs since the first in 1992. The former have won 44 and the latter 15, with one tie and one no-result. They have not met in the intermediate format of the international game since June 2016, when the West Indies won on the back of a century from batsman Darren Bravo, who is part of the squad for this World Cup.
