Lhuan-dre Pretorius says he’s learned a lot from Northerns Titans, and soon to be Hampshire Hawks, teammate Dewald Brevis.
The two South African batting prodigies are set to play together for Hampshire in England’s T20 Blast tournament, which starts on 29 May.
“Dewald is an exceptional young player who will add firepower to our batting lineup this summer,” said Hampshire director of cricket Giles White when the club announced the signings. “He will arrive having enjoyed good recent form, and alongside Lhuan-dre Pretorius we will have two young cricketers who are hungry to make their mark.”
Pretorius, who turned 19 on 27 March, was the top run-scorer in this year’s SA20, with 397 for the Paarl Royals in 12 matches at an average of 33.08 and a strike rate of 166.80.
He carried that form into the domestic season, scoring two centuries for the Titans in the One-Day Cup and two centuries and a fifty in the 4-Day Series.
Brevis has also had an excellent 2024-25 season, both for MI Cape Town in the SA20 and the Titans, leading to calls for him to be selected for the Proteas again, having made two T20I appearances against Australia in 2023.

Pretorius told SportsBoom that 21-year-old Brevis had helped him to deal with his rapid rise.
“Dewald was in my shoes not so long ago, so I’ve been speaking to him. He’s obviously also experienced a lot of things at a very young age, so he’s a good teammate and friend to have. I just try to sponge off him and learn from his lessons.
“We’ve become very good mates. He’s a bit older than me, but he’s experienced everything, basically all the leagues around the world [including the IPL, Caribbean Premier League and Major League Cricket], and he’s had a taste of international cricket as well.
“So you can speak to him about stuff and lessons he’s learned, and then you don’t want to make the same mistake. Not that he has made mistakes, but he warns you about certain things. If we go to lunch, we don’t speak about much about anything else, we just basically speak about cricket.
“We both have the same intentions and the same goal, so it’s really good to be able to have someone like that you can speak to.”
