• Form, more than balance, important to Kirsten

Head coach Gary Kirsten emerged pleased with the composition of the Durban Heat’s squad, after Tuesday’s player draft for the 2019 Mzansi Super League.

The Heat purchased former Proteas wicketkeeper-batsman Dane Vilas, who was the captain of the Jozi Stars during a title-winning 2018 MSL campaign.

The Durban franchise also bought England all-rounder Ravi Bopara, while leg-spinner Shaun von Berg joined from the Tshwane Spartans.

‘The draft is always a lot of fun. Every team has probably got who they want because that is how the draft is set up. You might not necessarily have the same players you were looking to get, but I think every team is well balanced,’ said Kirsten.

‘Now it’s really about which players will make big plays in the tournament and hit form. It’s all about which teams will hit form and create some nice momentum.’

Kirsten is an experienced T20 coach, having worked with the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League and Hobart Hurricanes in Australia’s Big Bash League. He will also be a coach in The Hundred – the England and Wales Cricket Board’s new limited-overs tournament.

‘I am happy with the balance of the squad for the Heat, but I’ve learned in the T20 format it’s not necessarily about balance, it’s often about guys who play well and show good form,’ added Kirsten.
