• Peterson: Breetzke’s never been afraid

Warriors coach Robin Peterson says Proteas batsman Matthew Breetzke has always backed himself.

Breetzke scored 150 on his ODI debut against New Zealand in February, followed by 83 against Pakistan in Karachi. He missed out on the Champions Trophy squad but returned for the recent ODI series in Australia, where he made 57 and 88.

Peterson, who has coached Breetzke at provincial level, believes that self-belief has been a hallmark of the right-hander’s game from a young age.

“Matthew’s never been afraid to put himself out there,” Peterson told the Sunday Times. “Even as a youngster, he had this quiet confidence about him – the kind where he trusted his method and his preparation. He backs his ability, and that’s why he’s been able to make the step up to international cricket.”

The former Proteas spinner praised Breetzke’s temperament, pointing to his composure under pressure.

“He doesn’t get flustered easily. He’s the kind of guy who can absorb pressure and then find ways to shift it back onto the opposition. That’s a big quality to have when you’re playing at the highest level.”

Peterson added that Breetzke’s growth is also down to hard work and a willingness to learn.

“He’s put in the hours and he’s always open to improving. You don’t see him taking shortcuts. The Matthew Breetzke you see now is the product of years of hard work – and there’s still more to come from him.”
