England had made 385 before South Africa lost Alviro Petersen with only one run on the board. Amla rebuilt the innings alongside Graeme Smith, adding 259 with the captain, who scored 131 in his 100th Test.
Amla then shared an unbroken 377-run partnership with Jacques Kallis, who finished on 182 not out.
The elegant right-hander faced 529 deliveries and struck 35 fours. He passed AB de Villiers’ previous national record of 278 not out before reaching his triple century with a boundary through the covers.
South Africa declared on 637-2 and dismissed England for 240 in their second innings to complete an innings-and-12-run victory.

Amla’s score remained South Africa’s Test record for almost 13 years. Wiaan Mulder surpassed it with an unbeaten 367 against Zimbabwe in July 2025.
