Earlier, Rhys Mariu recorded a career-best 249 off 258 balls (35 fours, two sixes) to power the visitors to a huge first-innings total.

New Zealand A had started the day in a dominant position on 357-1, but lost Joe Carter for 57 off 110 balls (six fours, one six) when he edged Ndwandwa to Sinethemba Qeshile.

Mariu went past his previous best of 240 before falling to the same bowler, caught by Tristan Luus with the score at 428. Ndwandwa kept chipping away, but Mitchell Hay’s unbeaten 71 off 115 balls (six fours, two sixes) carried the Kiwis beyond 600 before they declared.

South Africa A suffered a double blow as early as the fourth over when opener Lesego Senokwane (three) and Zubayr Hamza (nought) fell to Matthew Fisher (2-32). But Hermann and Ackerman steadied the innings with a 110-run stand for the third wicket.

Ackerman was eventually dismissed, but Hermann and Jason Smith (15*) guided the hosts to the close, still trailing by 470 runs.
