Hasan Nawaz marked his ODI debut with an unbeaten half-century to guide Pakistan to a five-wicket win over the West Indies in the opening match of their series on Friday.
Chasing 281 to win, the visitors were in trouble at 180-5 in the 38th over when Mohammad Rizwan was trapped lbw by Shamar Joseph for 53.
But Nawaz (63*) and Hussain Talat (41*) shared an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 104 to steer Pakistan home with seven balls to spare.
Nawaz struck three sixes and five fours in his 54-ball innings, including a six in the penultimate over and the winning boundary off the final ball of Joseph’s ninth over.
Talat’s knock came off 37 balls and featured one six and four fours.
Earlier, the West Indies posted 280 all out after being sent in to bat. Evin Lewis top-scored with 60 off 62 balls (three sixes, five fours), while Shai Hope made 55 and Roston Chase 53.
Shaheen Shah Afridi made early inroads by bowling Brandon King for four in the first over, the first of his four wickets.
Lewis fell in the 19th over, caught by Afridi off Saim Ayub, before Hope was bowled by Afridi for 55 with the hosts on 200-5 in the 41st over.
Chase brought up his half-century with a boundary but was caught by Babar Azam off Naseem Shah for 53 the next ball.
Naseem then bowled Gudakesh Motie and Jediah Blades with the final two deliveries of the innings.
The second ODI takes place on Sunday, with the series concluding on Tuesday.
