• Montrose Night Challenge back on track

    The annual Montrose Night Challenge, a Joburg primary schools T20 series played on Friday afternoons and nights, has been badly disrupted by the weather, writes THEO GARRUN.

    Last Friday saw the third round of the competition and the first day on which all the games could be concluded, so as it stands, only seven of the 12 games have been completed.

    Late-afternoon thunderstorms, with their accompanying lightning, have been the problem. Strict adherence to lightning warnings has become the order of the day in these parts, and the tragic deaths of two sports coaches in a week due to lightning strikes – one of them a cricket coach well-known to the Montrose tournament – have underlined the need for such safety measures.

    Tournament organiser Gwen Nelson said that all the games should be caught up by next week. ‘We have allowed schools to play their games at their own venues during the week if they were not able to start them at all over the last three Fridays,’ she said.

    The semifinals and finals are scheduled for 8 March.
