• Lions, WP boost playoff hopes

The Central Gauteng Lions and Western Province were victorious in the One-Day Cup on Wednesday.

At the Wanderers, the Lions delivered a clinical all-round performance to secure a seven-wicket victory over the KZN Dolphins.

After winning the toss and choosing to field, the Lions restricted the Dolphins to 239-9 in their 50 overs. Rising spinner Nqaba Peter was the standout performer with a superb 5-38, ripping through the Dolphins’ middle order and ensuring the visitors never fully capitalised on their start.

The Dolphins made several contributions but struggled to build meaningful partnerships, with Peter repeatedly breaking stands during the middle overs.

In reply, the Lions chased down the target comfortably, reaching 242-3 in 39.1 overs to secure a bonus-point win.

Zubayr Hamza led the charge with 119*, his second successive century in the competition.

With solid support from the top order, the Lions kept the required rate under control throughout, and the result was rarely in doubt once Hamza settled.

In Cape Town, Western Province edged Boland by three wickets in a tense, low-scoring derby at Newlands.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Boland struggled against a disciplined Province attack and were bowled out for 185 in 47.1 overs.

Jhedli van Briesies anchored the innings with 59 off 86 balls on a surface that offered assistance to the bowlers.

Fast bowler Nandre Burger played a decisive role with 4-30 and was named Player of the Match.

Province’s chase was equally challenging as Boland’s bowlers applied pressure throughout. However, the hosts edged closer to the target and eventually reached 186-7 in 44.5 overs to secure victory.

Jiveshan Pillay top-scored with 54 off 74 balls, while David Bedingham added 53 off 55 in a crucial contribution.
