• Flintoff: I’d love to be England coach

Former captain Andrew Flintoff has expressed interest in being England’s coach.

Current head coach Trevor Bayliss’ tenure will end later this year.

‘Coaching is definitely an ambition. There are probably two or three coaching jobs I’d like – England, Lancashire or Lancashire Academy,’ Flintoff told the BBC.

‘I’d love to be England coach one day, just not quite yet. I’ve got two of my coaching levels – me and [former England teammate] Steve Harmison might do our level threes soon.’

The 41-year-old Flintoff played 79 Tests, 141 ODIs and 7 T20Is between 1998 and 2009. He also represented the Chennai Super Kings and Brisbane Heat in the Indian Premier League and Australia’s Big Bash League, respectively.

‘A few years ago I applied for the England coaching job – we were getting beat, I was in the office and thought, “I’m going to apply”,’ he added.

‘I wrote an email for the interview, a month passed and I’d heard nothing. I chased it up, then I got a phone call saying they thought it was somebody taking the mick.’

England are currently playing Australia in the Ashes series. The five-match affair is locked at 1-1. The tourists won the first match at Edgbaston. The second fixture at Lord’s was drawn. The hosts triumphed in the third at Leeds. The fourth is under way in Manchester and The Oval in London will host the fifth.
