England’s 4-1 series victory against India has pushed them to the fourth position on the ICC Test rankings.
It was a comfortable series for the home side that, in the end, saw an emotional farewell match for Alastair Cook in his final international outing. Besides him finishing off the series with a half-century (71) and a ton (147) in his final two innings, his side supported his performances by dominating India in a 118-run win in the fifth and final Test.
Joe Root’s side started in fifth position prior to the start of the series with 97 points, but the emphatic victory over top-ranked India has gained them eight points and lifted them to 105 points.
England are now just one point behind South Africa and Australia, who are both on 106 points with the former marginally ahead on decimal points. New Zealand are not far behind on 102 points. There are now four teams within a space of five points of one another on the points table.
India have held on to top spot but the series defeat has seen them drop 10 points. This takes Virat Kohli’s side to 115 points, having started the series with 125 points.
