• CSA awards: Moore, Petersen or Piedt?

The annual Cricket South Africa awards will take place in Pretoria on Saturday. Several accolades will be handed out, including the Four-Day Franchise Series Cricketer of the Season.

The candidates: Pieter Malan, Edward Moore, Keegan Petersen, Dane Piedt, Nicky van den Bergh.

Malan was the third-highest run-scorer in the 2017-18 Sunfoil Series prior to the loss of sponsorship and renaming, and occupied the same position this season. He is that steely, solid rock at the top of the Cape Cobras order and almost debuted in Test cricket earlier this year.

Moore quietly went about his business, collecting 900-plus runs at an average of over 50 at the top of the Warriors order. This fine stretch of form in the Four-Day Franchise Series was mirrored at provincial level for Eastern Province, when he wasn’t part of the Warriors’ limited-overs squad.

Petersen beat Moore to the series-leading run-scorer mantle by two runs, but in one less innings. Twin centuries in the same match against his former franchise, the Cobras, typified the Knights star’s immense talent.

Piedt was the competition’s leading wicket-taker by a big stretch. The spinner took 54 in 18 innings – 20 more than his closest competitor and Cobras teammate Dane Paterson. A match haul of 13-141 against the Titans in Oudtshoorn was especially memorable. He is in contention for the Proteas’ Test series in India later this year.

Van den Bergh was right up there with the best during the 2018-19 first-class season. The Lions didn’t have a higher scorer. He hit one of the series’ two double-centuries – and the largest of the lot. His 217 not out contributed to a huge innings victory over the Titans in Benoni.

    Prediction: Dane Piedt
