• Brevis: The more I play, the better I’ll become

Dewald Brevis says making his Test debut for the Proteas in Bulawayo was a “dream come true”.

The 22-year-old made an immediate impression in the longest format, scoring 51 in his maiden innings at Queens Sports Club during South Africa’s dominant 2-0 series win over Zimbabwe. He followed that up with scores of three and 30, and also claimed his first Test wicket with the ball.

“It was very special,” Brevis told SportsBoom.co.za. “Obviously, the half-century on debut was special, but to win the series and be part of the playing XI for the first time made it even better. I really enjoyed every moment out there.”

Brevis had previously toured with the Proteas Test squad to Bangladesh without playing, but described the experience in Zimbabwe – and especially receiving his baggy green cap – as the realisation of a lifelong ambition.

“It’s still here next to me on my desk in my room,” he said of the cap. “It’s a dream come true, and I can’t wait for what the future holds.”

Known for his explosive strokeplay in white-ball cricket, Brevis embraced the opportunity to showcase his ability in the red-ball format, though he acknowledged the challenges of adapting at the highest level.

While Zimbabwe’s attack proved more effective in his second and third innings, the right-hander remains committed to evolving his game and is targeting a place in South Africa’s full-strength Test side.

“I think it’s very important to always know there’s room to improve,” said Brevis. “That’s the beauty of cricket – you can always get better, no matter how old you are or how long you’ve played.

“For me, it’s about staying true to the original Dewald, but also having that patience when it’s needed to succeed. There may have been a few small errors, but I know the more I play, the better I’ll become. It was very special, and I really enjoyed every moment.”
