South Africa will be without fast bowler Dale Steyn for Sunday’s World Cup fixture against Bangladesh at The Oval.

Steyn is still recovering from the shoulder injury sustained during a stint with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League earlier this year.

The same injury prevented him from participating in Thurday’s World Cup opening fixture against England at The Oval in London. The hosts won the match by 104 runs.

Earlier this week, head coach Ottis Gibson suggested Steyn wouldn’t be risked for the match against Bangladesh – and Cricket South Africa confirmed this on Saturday.

Seamer Dwaine Pretorius will likely be retained in the XI in the absence of Steyn, or replaced by fellow all-rounder Chris Morris or left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi.

The Proteas anticipate Steyn to be fit for Wednesday’s meeting with India at the Hampshire Bowl in Southampton. He boasts South Africa’s fifth most wickets in World Cup cricket, with 23 in 14 matches.

Whether batsman Hashim Amla will play against Bangladesh, meanwhile, remains in the balance. Amla was struck on the helmet by a short delivery from fast bowler Jofra Archer. He did not participate in Saturday’s practice.

South Africa and Bangladesh have contested 20 ODIs since 2002’s first. The former have won 17 and the latter three.
