It was a bittersweet introduction to the county scene for Morne Morkel, who produced a magnificent bowling performance in a losing cause as Surrey went down by 220 runs in the One-Day Cup.

Playing his first senior game after two outings in the Surrey second XI, Morkel bowled a tight line to end with the best economy rate of just five an over in his 10 overs – just four fours were taken off him.

It was a great return after spending so much time on the physio’s table since he injured himself in the fourth and final Test against Australia in early-April, when he played through pain to give himself a proper send-off after drawing a line under his international career. He has signed a two-year Kolpak contract.

The one wicket he took was that of his old teammate Heino Kuhn, who led the way in smashing the rest of Surrey’s bowling.

Kuhn ended with an excellent 117 off 112 balls, with 10 fours and a six, underpinning Kent’s insurmountable 384-8.

He put on 98 for the first wicket with Daniel Bell-Drummond (48), and 138 with Joe Denley (78) in just 19 overs.

In doing so, Kuhn, who signed a Kolpak contract this year, passed 4,000 List A runs. Kuhn played four Tests and seven T20s for South Africa.

Elsewhere, Colin Ingram smashed an unbeaten 95 off 86 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes, to take Glamorgan to a six-wicket win over Sussex.

David Wiese, batting at No 7, gave the south coast side a chance by top-scoring with 67 off 61 balls (seven fours, two sixes) and taking them to 277-8.
