Dolphins off the hook in final

Kingsmead ... under water again Dolphins off the hook in final
    Published on February 2, 2018 | Leave a response

A torrential downpour forced the abandonment of the Momentum One-Day Cup final in Durban, with the Warriors in the driving seat.

They sent the Dolphins in to bat, and had them struggling at 154-6 after 40 overs when lightning prompted the umpires to take the players off the field. Then the rain came down, and that was that.

The final will start again, at 0-0, at 1.30pm on Saturday.

The Dolphins will be the most relieved, after they were sent in to bat and struggled to make any sort of statement as they sought their first 50-over prize since 2002.

The Warriors made a great decision when they won the toss and sent the Dolphin in to bat, despite the fact that Sarel Erwee and Morne van Wyk put on 16 in the first two overs. But then Van Wyk drove down the wrong lane to be bowled by Andrew Birch for six, and it was game-on.

Vaughn van Jaarsveld was left to carry the burden as the rest of the top six departed with little input in the face of some tight bowling. He found a more steadfast partner in Senuran Muthusamy, but after putting on 41 together, Van Jaarsveld chipped a full-ish delivery from Anrich Nortje to mid-on.

Muthusamy, one of the finds of the season, scored a well deserved fifty as he and Keshav Maharaj (20) added another 32 for the sixth wicket, when Maharaj was bowled by Ayabulela Gqamane, playing across the line.

It could have been even better for the Warriors, but they were sloppy behind the stumps and in the field, as when four runs were gifted by an overthrow from the covers.

Robbie Frylink was on 12, and Muthusamy on 53, with 10 overs to go,  when the umpires took the players off.
