The Proteas batsman has been rewarded with the position after leading the unfancied Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the inaugural SA20 title.
Markram was the Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s top-scorer in the tournament with 366 at an average of 33.27 and a strike rate of 127.97.
He saved his best for when it mattered most, hitting 100 off 58 balls in the semi-final against the Joburg Super Kings in Centurion and 26 off 19 balls in a low-scoring final against the Pretoria Capitals at the Wanderers.
Markram is also in line to captain the Proteas’ T20I team after Temba Bavuma relinquished the role.
