Australia win toss, bat first

Australia will bat first after winning the toss ahead of the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead in Durban on Thursday.

Prior to the series, Proteas coach Ottis Gibson hinted at a change of strategy, and it was confirmed yesterday with South Africa going into the game with seven batsmen.

Lungi Ngidi therefore makes way, and Knights batsman Theunis de Bruyn comes in at No 7.

Captain Faf du Plessis returns to the side, as do AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock, who missed the recent T20I series against India through injury.

Meanwhile, Australia named an unchanged team, keeping faith in the XI that crushed England in the final Ashes Test.

South Africa: Aiden Markram, Dean Elgar, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Theunis de Bruyn, Vernon Philander, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Morne Morkel

Australia: David Warner, Cameron Bancroft, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith (c), Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine (wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.
