Proteas bowl first in Wellington

The Proteas have won the toss and have opted to field first in the second Test, as they look to go 1-0 up against New Zealand.

After the anti-climactic finish to the first Test in Dunedin, which saw the Proteas’ decent position squandered due to rain on day five, the visitors will look to make the most of what is expected to be a full five days’ play at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

New Zealand have been forced to make two injury-enforced changes, which will hamper their chances of winning their first Test against the Proteas since 2004. As expected, Tim Southee comes in for Trent Boult, with debutant Neil Broom moving in for Ross Taylor in what looks to be a fragile middle-order.

Faf du Plessis’ men are unchanged. ‘I’m thinking it’s a bit warmer so it might swing a bit,’ he said at the toss.

New Zealand: 1 Jeet Raval, 2 Tom Latham, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Neil Broom, 5 Henry Nicholls, 6 BJ Watling, 7 Jamie Neesham, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Neil Wagner, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Jeetan Patel

South Africa: 1 Stephen Cook, 2 Dean Elgar, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 JP Duminy, 5 Faf du Plessis, 6 Temba Bavuma, 7 Quinton de Kock, 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Morne Morkel
