Morkels, Tahir lose IPL contracts

Eight South Africans have been retained for IPL 2017, but eight have missed out.

With the tournament set to take place between 5 April and 21 May, there’s already been a lot of movement in the eight franchises, with no less than 40 players losing their contracts. Eight of those are South Africans, with the world’s No 1 bowler, Imran Tahir, headlining that list.

Dale Steyn ruled himself out of action last week, while fellow pacemen Morne Morkel, Kyle Abbott and Marchant de Lange will look to put their names in the hat elsewhere come the player auction. David Wiese, a high-profile capture for the Royal Challengers Bangalore for the 2014 edition, got the cut alongside Farhaan Behrdien and Albie Morkel too.

David Miller endured a tough campaign in his first season as captain of Kings XI Punjab last year, scoring just 161 runs from 14 matches at 16.10, but he’s retained for an amount exceeding R25-million. The other seven retained have all played Test cricket this year, including the likes cult hero AB de Villiers, Quinton de Kock and spinner Tabraiz Shamsi.
