Western Province claimed an eight-wicket victory over the Central Gauteng Lions in the CSA Women’s Pro50 final in Durban on Sunday.

WP produced a disciplined bowling display to dismiss the Lions for 99 in 29.3 overs before chasing down the target in 23.6 overs.

After winning the toss and batting first, the Lions struggled to build momentum against a probing Province attack.

Diara Ramlakan provided the resistance with a determined 41 off 51 balls, while Sarah Nettleton added an unbeaten 12 and Sunette Viljoen-Louw chipped in with eight.

However, wickets fell regularly as Province’s bowlers kept the pressure on. Delmari Tucker led the charge with an excellent spell of 3-18 in 7.3 overs, while Caitlin Wyngaard took 3-25 in eight overs.

Miya Lalor also contributed with 1-18 as the Lions were bowled out before reaching the halfway mark of their innings.

In reply, Province approached the chase with composure despite early strikes from the Lions’ experienced campaigner Shabnim Ismail, who claimed 2-34 in her eight-over spell.

Faye Tunnicliffe anchored the innings with a steady unbeaten 38 from 57 balls, while Megan Fourie added 20 to lay a solid platform for the chase.

Tucker capped off her impressive outing with an unbeaten 20 off 34 deliveries to help guide her side to victory with more than 26 overs to spare.

Speaking after being named Player of the Match, Tucker reflected on the challenging conditions and her team’s performance.

“It was really hot out there, but we just had to put in the hard work and keep going,” said Tucker.

“We’ve worked really hard as a team and sometimes things didn’t go our way, but today it all came together for us.”

“I’m really happy I could contribute with both bat and ball. The team did really well today and it’s great when everything comes together like that.”

Tucker also praised fellow seamer Wyngaard for her support with the ball.

“I never doubt Caitlin. If there’s someone I want to walk out next to, it’s definitely her.”
