Aiden Markram was one of three Proteas from the recent T20 World Cup snapped up at Thursday’s first-ever Hundred auction.
Markram secured the biggest payday among the South Africans sold at the auction after being snapped up by the Manchester Super Giants for £200,000 (about R4.5-million).
The 31-year-old was South Africa’s leading run-scorer at the recent T20 World Cup, with 286, the sixth-highest tally in the tournament, and was named in the Dream Team.
Markram will also reunite with familiar faces at Manchester. Former Proteas teammate Heinrich Klaasen is already part of the franchise, while Leus du Plooy also features in the squad after being signed for £120,000 (about R2.7 million).
Proteas opener Ryan Rickelton was another big winner at the auction, landing a £150,000 (about R3.4-million) contract with the Sunrisers Leeds.
Veteran middle-order star David Miller was picked up by Southern Brave for £110,000 (about R2.5-million), where he will be joined by fellow Proteas batsman Tristan Stubbs.
Young South African prospect Lhuan-dré Pretorius will link up with London Spirit after being signed for £31,000 (about R693,000), joining compatriot Dewald Brevis at the franchise.
Several other South Africans were already retained by their teams or contracted directly ahead of the auction.
Those players include Donovan Ferreira (£210,000, about R4.7-million, Birmingham Phoenix), Brevis (£185,000, about R4.1-million, London Spirit), Klaasen (£250,000, about R5.6-million, Manchester Super Giants), Stubbs (£100,000, about R2.2-million, Southern Brave) and Marco Jansen (£250,000, about R5.6-million, Welsh Fire).
