The Central Gauteng Lions claimed a 15-run DLS victory over Western Province in their One-Day Cup opener at the Wanderers on Saturday.
WP won the toss and posted 259-7 in a rain-reduced 42-over innings. In reply, the Lions reached 245-4 in 36 overs, with the result decided on the DLS method.
Province’s total was built around a fine century from David Bedingham, who struck 103 off 93 balls (11 fours, three sixes). He shared a strong opening stand with Tony de Zorzi, who made 59 off 49 as the visitors raced to 105-2 inside 15 overs.
The Lions hit back in the middle overs. Bjorn Fortuin was particularly economical, returning 2-39 in his 10 overs, while Nqaba Peter claimed 2-46. Codi Yusuf also picked up two wickets to prevent Province from fully capitalising on their platform.
Josh Breed added 43*, but regular wickets stalled the late surge.

With rain intervening and the target adjusted, Mitchell van Buuren anchored the Lions’ chase. The right-hander finished unbeaten on 88* off 76 balls (three fours, three sixes), controlling the tempo as the required rate shifted under DLS.
Zubayr Hamza provided early impetus with 46 off 38 balls, while Reeza Hendricks (18) and Rassie van der Dussen (15) chipped in.
After slipping to 86-3, the Lions rebuilt to 169-4 before Van Buuren and Connor Esterhuizen steered the hosts home. Esterhuizen contributed an assured 39* off 29 balls to ensure there were no late hiccups.
For WP, Beuran Hendricks returned 1-51, while Kyle Simmonds was the most economical with 1-22 in eight overs.
The revised equation ultimately favoured the Lions, who managed the chase smartly to seal a 15-run victory.
