Proteas batting coach Ashwell Prince insists Dewald Brevis does not have a technical flaw against the short ball.
Brevis has endured a mixed SA20 campaign, with fast bowlers increasingly targeting him with pace and bounce. In recent matches, Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee both dismissed the 22-year-old with well-directed short deliveries, prompting debate around a potential vulnerability.
“I don’t think Dewald has a technical weakness against the bouncer. It’s a case of choosing which deliveries to hit for six and which ones to just take a single,” Prince told Rapport.
Another common criticism levelled at Brevis is that he appears to operate almost exclusively in top gear, sometimes sacrificing his wicket early when a more measured approach might benefit the team.

“It’s a case of smart cricket, of good match awareness. You have to find a balance,” said Prince. “If you go out with six overs left and give up your wicket, then you’ve wasted six overs that you could have used to do a lot of damage. And then a new partnership has to try to build momentum again from scratch.”
