• Markram: Big run chase gives Proteas belief

Aiden Markram says each Proteas batsman backed their game in Wednesday’s series-levelling ODI win against India in Raipur.

Markram struck a superb 110 off 98 balls to set up the Proteas’ pursuit of a mammoth 359 to win.

After Quinton de Kock fell cheaply, Markram and captain Temba Bavuma (46) produced a 101-run partnership before adding another 70 with Matthew Breetzke (68).

Dewald Brevis injected further momentum with a blazing 54 off 34, combining with Breetzke in a vital 92-run stand.

Corbin Bosch and Keshav Maharaj then cooly knocked off the remaining runs after Tony de Zorzi had retired hurt.

“It was about each guy backing their game, having confidence and trusting the guys,” Markram said. “To chase quite a big number gives the group belief … we’ve done it before and we can do it again.”

Reflecting on the quality of opposition, he added: “It’s a world-class team in their own conditions … to chase down 360 is always a tough effort. I think the boys will be in good spirits.”

Markram credited Brevis and Breetzke for their impact.

“Brevis hits the ball miles … it’s great to watch. Breetzke managed the situation really well today. It almost feels weird that he’s only played 11 games.

“Runs only matter if you win games,” he added. “This result makes me really happy … we’ve got some great hitters and great batters in the middle to lower order.”
