Western Province claimed a four-wicket victory over the North West Dragons in their T20 Challenge encounter at Newlands on Sunday.
After losing the toss and being put into bat, the Dragons posted 186-5. Diego Rosier top-scored with a fluent 73, while Ludwich Schuld added an impressive 61 off 40 balls.
In reply, WP made light work of the chase, with Daniel Smith leading the charge with a superb 80, well-supported by Valentine Kitime, who contributed a brisk 50. The pair’s partnership laid the foundation for a comfortable run chase, as Province reached the target inside 17 overs to seal their opening win.
Meanwhile in Joburg, Boland continued their winning momentum with a hard-fought eight-run victory over the Central Gauteng Lions at the Wanderers.
Asked to bat first, Boland were bowled out for 138 in 18 overs, before a disciplined bowling display saw them defend the modest total. Delano Potgieter was the lone fighter for the Lions with an unbeaten 46, but the hosts could only reach 130, handing Boland their second win of the campaign.
On Saturday, the EP Warriors got their first points on the board with a dominant performance against the Northerns Titans in Centurion.
The visitors piled on 193-3, powered by outstanding innings from Matthew de Villiers (74) and JP King (76*).
The Warriors’ bowling attack then took control, with Mathew Boast (4-23) and Kerwin Mungroo (3-24) dismantling the Titans’ batting order to bowl them out for 107, sealing an emphatic 86-run victory.
In Durban, the KZN Dolphins edged out the KZN Inland Tuskers by 14 runs in a thrilling KwaZulu-Natal derby.
The Dolphins posted 178-5, thanks to a dream debut from Gomolemo Phiri, who struck an unbeaten 64 to guide the hosts to a defendable total.
Despite a spirited 55 from Sean Gilson, the Tuskers fell short in their chase, closing on 164-7 after 20 overs.
