• Red-hot Breetzke hopes to keep going

    Matthew Breetzke says he wants to take every opportunity after a record-breaking start to his ODI career.

    The 26-year-old scored a superb 85 in Thursday’s second ODI against England to become the first batsman in ODI history to begin his career with five consecutive scores of 50 or more, taking his tally to 463 runs at an average of 92.60.

    “The way I look at it, I’m so grateful to be playing this sport for a living,” Breetzke said after the Proteas’ five-run win at Lord’s that gave them an unassailable 2-0 series lead. “I just try to take every opportunity I get and make the most of it.

    “It doesn’t last forever, so hopefully, I can keep going … to be honest, I was bleak not to get the hundred. It would have been cool to be on the [honour’s] board, but at least we won, so happy days.

    “Playing at Lord’s, there’s nothing better.”

    Breetzke went into the match on the back of three consecutive fifties for Northamptonshire in the T20 Blast, and is eager to keep building on his hot streak.

    “I love playing cricket in England,” he added. “Just the crowds and the energy that they bring, there’s nothing better. I feed off it. It’s been good and long may it continue.”
