Ashwell Prince continued in brilliant form as he hit his fourth hundred of the season and led Lancashire to an innings victory against Leicestershire in the English County Championship on Tuesday.
His 104 was a well-measured effort off 171 balls,with just 13 fours. It brought to 939 the number of runs he has scored this season, far and away the top scorer throughout the championship. In the Second Division, Steve Davies follows with 68o runs; in the First Division, the best of the batsmen is James Hildreth with 654.
Lancashire ended on 483, a lead of 276 on the first innings
Leicestershire were bolstered by a fighting 54 from Andrea Agathangelou in the first innings, but there was nothing the Rustenburg-born Cypriot could do to stop Zimbabwe bowler Kyle Jarvis, who ended with 5-44 as Leicestershire crumbled to 119. Jarvis is the division’s leading wicket-taker with 55 from nine matches.
This gave Lancashire their sixth win out of nine matches and enhanced their standing at the top of the Div 2 table to 51 points over Surrey.
Down in Taunton, Johann Myburgh scored 56 in Somerset’s second innings score of 274-5, chasing 401 for victory over Nottinghamshire. They are 127 behind in a touch-and-go game.
Earlier, Tim Groenewald took 3-65, and Alfonso Thomas 2-43, holding Notts to 190, to which Rikki Wessels contributed 28.
Jacques Rudolph‘s Glamorgan is in a tough fight against Surrey, trailing by 83 runs with two wickets remaining.
Colin Ingram flew the Saffa flag with a rapid 43 off 42 balls (6×4, 1×6), batting at No 4, which was brave, given that Glamorgan were 25-3 after Rudolph was bowled by Tom Curran (son of Zim international Kevin) for 18 while chasing a Surrey total of 406.
It was a bitter-sweet day for Wayne Madsen in Chelmsford, where he scored a dogged 112 off 163 balls in a futile effort to prevent Essex winning by an innings.
It helped make up for his first-innings 0, when Derbyshire were dismissed for 148, to which Essex replied with 473. West Indian Chesney Hughes contributed 80, but no one else was able to support Madsen and Derbys collapsed from 219-3 to 294 all out.
