South Africa’s captain Faf du Plessis has pleaded guilty to falling short of the ICC’s over-rate allocation which ensured the team were punished heavily after the Wanderers Test.
The Proteas were deemed to have fallen short of the target for over rates by three overs, which had them sanctioned in terms of the ICC’s code of conduct as well as the World Test Championship (WTC).
Playing without a spinner, the players were fined 20% of their match fees for every over the side fell short in the time allocated to them.

Added to that was the punishment in line with Article 16.11.2 of the WTC’s playing conditions, which states a side is penalised two points for every over they are short.
South Africa, the first to be docked points under the new regulations, are seventh out of nine teams in the inaugural WTC, with 24 points after seven matches.
