Vernon Philander took four for 56 off 19 overs to help restrict Somerset to 312 on the first day of their county championship match at Nottingham on Sunday.

He started well by bowling veteran opener Marcus Trescothick for o, and then smashed through the top order, taking three of the first four wickets to fall. Only Johann Myburgh escaped, as he battled on to fall one short of a fifty, off 77 balls after a stand of 78 with James Hildreth for the third wicket.

In reply, Notts were 57-2 with former Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor on 16, and Tim Groenewald, formerly of Maritzburg College, having 1-16.

Lancashire’s Alviro Petersen is still battling for runs in the county championship, dismissed for eight against Leicestershire at Grace Road, Leicester. Ashwell Prince also had a less than spectacular day,  out for 29 off 81 balls as Lancashire moved to 356-9.

Petersen, started with a bang scoring scoring 115 in his first innings, but then has had just one fifty in eight innings, and only passed 20 on one other occasion.

Prince, however, has settled in well, scoring two centuries and two fifties in his eight visits to the crease.
