• Cricket Sixes Festival back in February

The Cape Town Cricket Sixes will be held at the Green Point Cricket Club from 22-24 February.

The festival, now in its fourth year, brings one of Cape Town’s best sporting experiences to life. Whether you’re a medium-fast or a fast-medium bowler, or simply a cricket fan wanting to enjoy the matches and engage with some of South Africa’s cricket legends, then the Cape Town Sixes is the place to be.

Over the past few years, the festival has grown from strength to strength, from around 40 teams in 2016 to just over 60 teams in 2017, attracting players from Dubai, Qatar, Durban and Johannesburg. The Cape Town Cricket Sixes incorporates all players across all skill levels by allowing entrants to participate in different leagues such as social league, lager league, development league and the much-anticipated VIP corporate cup.

‘This year promises to be the biggest and most extravagant one yet,’ says Sean Young, founder of the festival. ‘Over 100 teams will be playing, including the SA Cricket and Laureus Legends teams. We will also be offering an array of football leagues, and we have added two women’s leagues to the tournament. There will be a lineup of activities and sports to choose from.

‘One of our highlights this year is a sponsored helicopter catch competition, join in the fun and try to catch the highest ball dropped from one of Cape Town Helicopter’s choppers. You really couldn’t ask for a more action-packed sporting weekend.’

Added to the vast sporting activities on offer are some delectable champagnes and wines to choose from; look out for the gin and champagne VIP area, the gourmet food trucks hosted in the global food village, all while listening to some of the top SA bands and music talent, such as The Kiffness and reggae legends The Rivertones.

    Its Just Not (Only) Cricket

    Cricket

This year the Cape Town Cricket Sixes will be offering six cricket leagues to choose from. Each of the leagues is guaranteed to have five matches (three on Saturday and two on Sunday), followed by a final and semi-final round. There will also be two women’s leagues added to the main tournament and a junior cricket tournament on Friday before the weekend festivities kick off. There will also be an exhibition match between the SA Cricket team, SA Rugby and the Laureus Legends teams. Teams travelling from outside Cape Town are welcome to check out the travel packages available. To book your team for the corporate cup and play against some of the top cricket stars, such as Alan Donald, Brett Schultz, Meyrick Pringle and Jacques Rudolph, please visit their website.

    Football

Adding to the excitement once again this year, are the Cape Town Cricket Sixes football leagues powered by Fives Futbol. This is the first time that the Cape Town Cricket Sixes will offer a football league and it’s anticipated to be a popular addition to the festival. Footie fans will be pleased that there will be three divisions for teams to choose from, and each team is guaranteed at least four games with group stages being played on Saturday, with elimination rounds and finals on Sunday. If your team is not from Cape Town, please see more about travel arrangements, or to book your team into a league, please visit the Cape Town Sixes website.

    Food and drink

The Global Food village will be hosting an array of food from around the world, representing all the nations that make up the world of cricket. Look forward to traditional curry, freshly made sushi, pulled pork rolls and hamburgers. To wash it all down, choose from an array of craft beers like Newlands Spring or visit the Castle Corner for some traditional Castle brews. If beer isn’t what you’re after, then grab a Beefeater gin and tonic to keep you cool while watching the pitch festivities.

    Cricket for a Cause

    #HitPovertyforASix

The Cape Town Cricket Sixes believe in community upliftment and empowerment. Giving back and developing the game of cricket is what the Cape Town Sixes is all about. Their CSR initiative #HitPovertyForASix, will be running various cricket coaching clinics leading up to the main event. The Cape Town Cricket Sixes ambassadors are some of South Africa’s most legendary cricket heroes, who will be giving their time and expertise to teach and train Cape Town children from surrounding townships. These youth groups can look forward to being coached by the likes of Allan Donald, Brett Schultz, Jacques Rudolph and Meyrick Pringle, to name but a few.
