• Gibbs to coach Balkh Legends

Former South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs has been appointed head coach of the Balkh Legends in the Afghanistan Premier League.

Gibbs coached Kuwait during the International Cricket Council World T20 sub-regional qualifiers earlier this year, while last year he was the coach of the Rajputs in the T10 League.

South African trio Colin Ingram, Wayne Parnell and Cameron Delport will compete in the 2018 APL, which will be played in October.

Parnell and Ingram were bought by the Kabul franchise for R450,000 and R750,000, respectively. Paktia purchased Delport for R750,000.

‘There will be a total of 23 matches between five teams,’ Afghanistan Cricket Board chief executive Shafiq Stanikzai told ESPNcricinfo earlier this year.

‘The league will take place in the UAE, but we haven’t yet decided on which cities will play host to the league. But now we have got official approval from the Emirates Cricket Board, and we’d like to thank them for that. It should be a really good competition and we are excited.’

The hard-hitting Gibbs struck more than 14,000 runs across 90 Tests, 248 ODIs and 23 T20Is between 1996 and 2010.
