• 100 up for the Steyn remover

    Dale Steyn should play in his 100th ODI on Tuesday, against Ireland at the World Cup. Here are some interesting facts and numbers from his 99 matches so far.

    Asish Nehra was Steyn’s first ODI wicket. It was a match featuring an Africa XI against an Asia XI at Centurion in August 2005.

    Brad Haddin (Australia) and Mohammed Hafeez (Pakistan) are the two batsmen most dismissed by Steyn. He has got them both out five times. Others that he has got out three times are: David Warner (Australia), Dwayne Bravo (West Indies), Ashish Nehra (India), Nathan Hauritz (Australia), Glenn Maxwell (Australia) and Umar Akmal (Pakistan).

    SuperSport Park in Centurion is his most successful ground. Steyn has collected 18 wickets at the venue. Other favourites are Kingsmead and Harare (both 13), St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth (12) and eight at both Newlands and the Wanderers.

    AB de Villiers has shared in the most Steyn dismissals – 20. Of those 12 have been caught as wicketkeeper and eight caught in the field. Others to feature highly are Mark Bioucher (10 caught behind), Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock (the former caught in the field, the latter caught behind) and Morne Morkel, Jacques Kallis and Graeme Smith have all taken eight catches off Steyn’s bowling, while Johan Botha is next most, with six catches.

    154 The number of ODI wickets that Steyn has taken, at an average of 25.58 and an economy rate of 4.82 runs per over.

    98 The number of ODI matches in which he has bowled. The other one, against England at Cardiff in 2008, was washed out as a no result with the Proteas 6 for 1.

    6-39 His best bowling performance. It came against Pakistan in Port Elizabeth in November 2013. Chasing 263 for victory in 45 overs, the Proteas were 261-6 and lost by one run.

    25 The least number of runs Steyn has conceded in his full 10 overs. He returned figures of 10-1-25-5 against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in November 2013.

    89 The most runs Steyn has conceded in his 10 over spell, against India at Gwalior in February 2010. He bowled a maiden over but went wicketless.

    118 The number of right-handed batsmen Steyn has dismissed, along with 36 left-handed batsmen.
